Skier’s Thumb

Where the thumb meets the hand, the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint features the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), which stabilizes the thumb when grasping or pinching. Skier’s, or gamekeeper’s, thumb refers to a tear in the UCL usually the result of the thumb having been pulled unnaturally back or to the side. Patients with this kind of rupture may experience pain, swelling, bruising, instability, as well as reduced strength and overall thumb function.

In terms of treatment, immobilization with a splint or cast may be recommended to reduce swelling prior to any possible surgery. If severe enough, surgically repairing a UCL tear may be a first priority. During the procedure, the surgeon will clean the damaged tissue,  and then anchor the tissue to the ligament attached to the thumb bone for added support. In addition, pins may be inserted to secure a fractured bone and ensure proper healing. To restore range of motion and alleviate symptoms, bracing and physical therapy are recommended following surgery.
