Herniated Disc

Commonly affecting the lower back, or lumbar, a herniated disc occurs when the soft inner portion of a spinal disc pushes against the outer ring of the disc, and sometimes, even protrudes through the outer ring. This then causes inflammation to the spinal nerves, and places undue pressure on the surrounding nerves. Resulting symptoms include radiating pain, numbness, and weakness. The exact cause of what is also called a slipped disc or ruptured disc tends to be associated with a sudden injury or the result of natural aging and degenerative disc disease.

When seeking relief and improved mobility beyond conservative, non-surgical treatments, patients can take advantage of either traditional open surgery or minimally invasive spine surgery that can be performed on an outpatient basis. The main surgical treatments for herniated discs include discectomy, laminotomy, laminectomy, and spinal fusion. The exact treatment course will depend largely on the nature of the condition
