Sciatica Treatment
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, running through the buttock and the back of the leg. A symptom of an underlying medical condition in the lower back, sciatica refers to the intensifying pain, which travels down the sciatic nerve, radiating down one or both of the legs to the foot with associated numbness and tingling as well. Consequently, a patient’s mobility can be greatly affected when the sciatic nerve is adversely affected.
The focus of treatment is therefore on correcting the underlying lower back condition, which includes degenerative disc disease, herniated or slipped discs, spinal stenosis, and spondylolisthesis. Each of these have non-surgical treatment options, like physical therapy, bracing, and pain management, but in chronic conditions, respective surgical options seek decompression or spinal fusion to alleviate any pressure on the sciatic nerve.
