Cervical Fusion

Traumatic injuries to the neck can pose serious risks of fractures, instability and spinal cord damage in the affected area, which can be both painful and life-altering. Additionally, conditions like herniated discs, arthritis, spinal deformities, and spinal stenosis tend to require intervention. Depending on the nature and severity of the condition, cervical spinal fusion may be utilized to effectively treat misalignment, as well as these other conditions, when non-surgical treatments fail to reduce pain in the neck.

Also known as arthrodesis, cervical spinal fusion was developed to join, or fuse, segments of bone in the neck, or cervical spine. The goal of spinal fusion is to stop the motion caused by instability in those segments. This surgical procedure may be performed through incisions in the back or front of the neck using bone grafts, or artificial materials to fuse vertebrae, metal plates and screws to stabilize the vertebrae, or the removal of vertebra or spinal disc. A comprehensive diagnosis will best determine what is the right course of treatment for each individual patient.
