Cervical Arthroplasty

Herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, arthritis, and cervical spinal stenosis can all present a need for surgical treatment. This is because of the presence of bone spurs and/or protrusions of the soft inner portion of cervical discs into the spinal canal that cannot be corrected conservatively. With increasing pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots, patients experiencing chronic neck pain, numbness, weakness, and mobility issues need a surgical solution.

If physical therapy and pain management do not effectively relieve symptoms, cervical arthroplasty may be performed through a small incision in the front of the neck. Cervical arthroplasty is a joint replacement procedure in which all or part of a damaged cervical disc in the spine is removed (discectomy), including any fragments and bone spurs, and replaced with an artificial disc. This prosthetic device is designed to restore spinal stability and alignment, while preserving motion in the neck. Your surgeon will ascertain the right course of action for you based on the nature of your condition.
